Interview with the Team behind The Hemp Box

This week I had the opportunity to do an interview with Jake Browne, Samantha Sandt, and Zac Maas, the team behind The Hemp Box.  I love health and beauty boxes so I am anxiously waiting for their first box, but while I do this is a great time to learn more about The Hemp Box!

Give a brief description of The Hemp Box.

The Hemp Box is a monthly gift of industry leading beauty, health, and nutritional products that are all made with 100% legal hemp. We send out full-sized as well as sample items for customers to try, then offer a wide variety of products in our online store. There are substantial benefits to using hemp for your body and the world around you, making this box ideal for people who are interested in looking good while feeling good about their purchase.

How did you decide to start a subscription box?

For us, this is a great discovery item. There are a lot of people who might use a hemp limp balm that never knew how good hemp seeds are for you. There are also a lot of professional brands that just need exposure to a broader audience to really take off, so a subscription box makes sense to helping them go from a boutique business to the big box stores.

Why hemp products?

They're great for you, which is why cultures have used hemp for thousands of years. It does wonders on skin with its natural oils, with people saying they're using it to treat dry skin, rashes, and eczema. Hemp protein is a great source of Omega 3's and 6's, with the ideal ratio of each, and provide fiber and are full of antioxidants. Finally, hemp is an environmentally friendly crop, using little to no pesticides and helping prevent soil erosion.

What are some of the misconceptions about hemp?

Primarily that it's marijuana and can get you high. This couldn't be further from the truth. Hemp is legal for us to sell in all 50 states, and we have a third party testing facility that ensures our products contain only trace amounts of THC - the compound in marijuana that gets people "high" - to make sure that our products are safe for consumers.

Who is your target market?

We're really trying to engage women, as we feel like these products speak directly to them. Our products are high-quality, green, and sustainable, so we're perfect for someone who likes to treat themselves conscientiously.

What kind of items can we expect to find in The Hemp Box?

Our primary focus will always be beauty and health products, so this includes cosmetics, skin care products, and so on. We'll try to also feature a nutritional item each month, from hemp oil to granola bars with hemp seeds. Our first month will feature the latter, with (SPOILER ALERT!) Nature's Path on board as our first foodie item. We're very excited.

What criteria does a product have to meet to be included in the box?

Our team is serious about what products make the box. Each product is quality tested, including laboratory drug tests to ensure it’s legal to ship, and passes our guidelines for packaging requirements. There are so many product partners that have approached us already, it gives us the ability to say “No” when we feel we need to. This is also a quickly expanding industry, so there are great new brands to discover all the time. Ultimately, they need to be a high-end item with great branding that, most importantly, works.

When is the anticipated launch date?

We're looking to have our first boxes out mid-May, with our online store coming on June 1st.

How much will the box cost?  How can readers sign up for the launch box?

Our first box is $20, although we'd love to see that come down as more sign-ups help us drive down our costs. We're doing a one-time offer for three and six month boxes right now via our Indiegogo page, but a trial month is available with no recurring billing as well.
